10 things to see (and do) in Lugano

Nestled between Monte Bré and Monte San Salvatore, overlooking the lake of the same name, Lugano is a picturesque city in southern Switzerland, the most important center of the Canton of Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland. About an hour from Milan and easily accessible from the rest of Switzerland, Lugano is the ideal destination for a weekend of nature, glamor and relaxation. Here are 10 tips on what to see and do in Lugano and its surroundings.

1) Historical center

The starting point for discovering the city is Piazza della Riforma, the living room of Lugano. With its arcades, the civic palace, its Cafés and boutiques, it hosts the great events of the city, such as Christmas in the square with its tall Christmas tree. From the square open the pedestrian shopping streets such as Via Nassa and Via Pessina.

2) Ciani Park

With its 63,000 square meters, Parco Ciani is the green lung of the Luganesi. Ideal for sports, walks along the lake, it has characteristics of the Italian and English gardens. Inside the park there are also several buildings: the Villa Ciani, the Palazzo dei Congressi, the dock, the Cantonal Museum of Natural History and the Cantonal Library.

3) Lake

One of the beauties that makes Lugano a unique place is the lake of the same name on which the Ticino city overlooks. A ride on the lake or a walk along its banks is an unmissable attraction during a stay in Lugano.

4) Lugano from above

One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Lugano and its territory is to admire it from the top of Monte Bré or Monte San Salvatore. Whether you are sporty or prefer the convenience of the funicular, once you have reached the panoramic points of the 2 mountains, the view that will open to your eyes will be spectacular. 5) Parco dell'Olivo

A terraced park at the foot of Monte Bré with Mediterranean tones in contrast with the lake and the surrounding mountains. A path for sportsmen and Sunday strolls just a few minutes from the center.

6) Art in Lugano

Lugano is a lively city from a cultural point of view, having several prestigious museums such as the MASI in the headquarters of Palazzi Reali and in the headquarters of the LAC.

7) Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Episcopal seat since 1971, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo dates back to the 11th century. In Romanesque style which served as the basis for later insertions in Gothic-Renaissance and Baroque styles, it is the fulcrum of the religious life of the Ticino city.

8) Swissminiatur

A theme park a few kilometers from Lugano, it is the ideal destination for families with children where you can admire the beauties of Switzerland in miniature in a naturalistic context of high value.

9) Lugano gastronomy

In the Lugano region there is no shortage of food and wine excellences. From cheeses, through honey (especially chestnut), meats and cured meats, the most demanding palates will be satisfied. Excellent wine production in the region which with its mild climate is expressed in quality wines such as Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay.

10) Trips out of town

The Lugano region can be the starting point for discovering Ticino, like its capital Bellinzona, or the nearby Swiss ski resorts.
