My 10 Favorite beaches of South Sardinia

Matteo Massoni

Today we remain in my island, Sardinia. Hoping to be able to enjoy soon, in my free time, the beauty of its landscape and its beaches, I present today my ten favorite beaches of Southern Sardinia where, thanks to the geographical proximity from my home, Cagliari, they represent my escape from the daily routine at any time of the year. And with this post I will try to convince you to come and visit us once the pandemic nightmare we are experiencing has ended!

1) Poetto beach - Cagliari

Obviously I can’t help to start my list from the main beach of my city. Less than ten minutes walk from my house, you reach the beach of “one hundred thousand”, so called for the summer crowding that distinguishes it. With its approximately 9 km it is one of the longest beaches in Sardinia. Dominated by the symbol of Cagliari, the saddle of the Devil at whose feet we find the marina of Marina Piccola, the Poetto beach has undergone an important redevelopment in recent years, making its promenade one of the most beautiful, dynamic and organized in Europe. Ideal destination for sports, entertainment and nightlife, it has nothing to envy to the beaches furthest from the Sardinian capital. Shallow waters, crystal clear water a few km from the center of a metropolitan city of almost 500.000 people.

2) Mari Pintau beach - Quartu Sant'Elena

About half an hour by road from Cagliari, along the south-east coast of the island, we find a pearl. Mari Pintau, a sea painted in Sardinian language, summarizes the beauty of this beach made of large pebbles with a sandy bottom. The water is crystal clear and in shades ranging from emerald to blue. Simply marvellous.

3) Porto Giunco beach - Villasimius

Villasimius needs no introduction. The municipality about 40 km from Cagliari offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean and a protected natural oasis, that of Capo Carbonara, which preserves a unique natural heritage in the world. Porto Giunco is one of the best known beaches in the country. Also called “Beach of the two seas” for its position between the sea and the pond of Notteri, it is surmounted by the Aragonese Tower of Porto Giunco. The beach is very white and the sea gives all the blue reflections.

4) Punta Molentis beach - Villasimius

One of my favorite beaches in Sardinia. Punta Molentis is a small beach created in a promontory where small coves open. The beach is subject to special protection by the municipality of Villasimius which has imposed limited access to preserve its beauty. The arched beach is topped by a promontory where you can enjoy a unique view of the whole isthmus being able to take unforgettable photos.

5) Cala Sinzias beach - Castiadas

In the municipality of Castiadas, in the south-east coast about 40 minutes from Cagliari, we find a splendid beach. Extended for a few km, a few steps from other cult beaches of Southern Sardinia such as Costa Rei, Cala Pira or the Scoglio di Peppino, Cala Sinzias offers wide spaces, white sand and rocky bottoms bordered behind by a pine forest, ideal for picnics and refreshments. In Cala Sinzias there is also one of the most beautiful beach restaurants in Southern Sardinia, Lido Tamatete.

6) Nora beach - Pula

We move to the south-west coast, in the municipality of Pula, one of the most popular tourist destinations for tourists from all over the world, as well as for people from Cagliari. Among the various beaches it offers, my favorite is that of Nora, a few steps from the remains of the ancient Phoenician and Roman city of Nora. Adjacent to the archaeological area and the church of Sant’Efisio, the final destination of the pilgrimage of the saint during the May 1st festival, the beach offers shallow waters, fine and clear sand with a unique naturalistic area behind it, the lagoon of Nora, famous for its turtle recovery activities and for its commitment to safeguarding the area. Close to this beach, a visit to the adjacent Su Guventeddu beach and of course a visit to the archaeological area of Nora, unique in the Mediterranean.

7) Pinus Village beach - Pula

Now I present a beach to which I am particularly fond, having spent over 20 summers of my life. A few km from Chia, on the border between the municipality of Pula and Domus de Maria, the beach of Pinus Village is a lesser known pearl, which unfortunately due to the erosion of the coast is gradually losing its initial charm. Set in a splendid cove from which other small coves, caves and suggestive corners open, the beach offers an emerald green sea, low and rocky bottoms. Topped by a lush pine forest, it is the starting point of the ancient Roman road of Bithia.

8) Su Giudeu beach - Chia, Domus De Maria

Chia needs no introduction. The fraction of the municipality of Domus De Maria is annually awarded with countless titles that make it among the most popular places in the Sardinian tourist panorama. Among the various beaches that the area offers, my favorite is Su Giudeu. Considered the most beautiful beach in Italy, this spacious beach whose name derives from the islet easily accessible from the beach with a quick swim. Golden sand dunes, wide spaces and seabed rich in fish. One of the most beautiful jewels in Sardinia.

9) Tuerredda beach - Teulada

The Caribbean in Sardinia. Tuerredda beach offers white sand and a blue sea with unique colors. Sheltered from the wind, the beach is often crowded and also subject to access restrictions during the high season. The view from the top of the cove explains his hunger. Undoubtedly one of my favorite beaches.

10) Is Arenas Biancas beach - Teulada

Also in the municipality of Teulada, the white dune beach is a Mediterranean rarity. Known worldwide for the high dunes of fine white sand, the beach is located in a military area and has access restrictions during some periods of the year. A surreal place where you can admire a real paradise with unforgettable charm.

I would have many other beaches to recommend to you a few km from Cagliari. To you to discover them! Do not hesitate to comment leaving your impressions and advice for other fantastic places in Sardinia!

See you soon, stay safe!
