Destination Maldives: what to pack

Matteo Massoni

One of the doubts that first arose my mind when I decided to organize my trip to the Maldives was: what should I pack?

The answer seems obvious: a swimsuit, flip flops and sunscreen. In fact, to enjoy the trip to one of the most desired exotic destinations in the world without incurring bad surprises, it is right to plan in detail the list of indispensable things in your luggage.

Let’s start with clothing. The Maldivian seasons are quite monotonous. Temperatures are hot both day and night, with more abundant rains in the wet season (generally between April and October but now with climate change the distinction between dry and wet season is much less precise). Consequently, the clothes to wear are rather simple, t shirts, shorts, short-sleeved shirts for men, light dresses, sarongs for women. Indispensable flip flops or sandals, to avoid closed shoes. Obviously for more or less elegant evenings organized in the resort a more chic garment can find space in a suitcase but in principle all the resorts, even the most luxurious, maintain a casual and casual style.

As for other must-haves in the baggage for the Maldives, I cannot fail to mention an underwater camera to capture the myriad of fish and corals that you will encounter during your dives, mask, snorkel and fins (inquire before the trip if your village offers free or rent equipment to avoid overloading your baggage, especially if you reach your destination by seaplane, which imposes strict rules for baggage allowance), sunscreen with high protection (the Maldivian sun is extremely strong, beware of sunburn!), after sun cream, a hat or bandana and an adapter for electrical outlets (although many resorts provide it).

As a doctor I can not recommend a mini travel pharmacy to deal with minor ailments that could compromise the good progress of your holiday.

Before the trip I recommend starting, 4-5 days before departure, the intake of probiotics or lactic ferments to be continued for the duration of the stay to avoid unpleasant gastrointestinal disturbances favored by the change of diet and transport. Other necessary medications are: a broad-spectrum antibiotic, a diarrhea drug, pain relievers and antipyretics, medications for nausea and vomiting, a disinfectant, sunburn creams. If the resort where you will go does not guarantee the presence of a doctor on site, it may be necessary to obtain other drugs such as a sunburn cream, eye drops, ear drops (be careful of the risk of otitis in case of prolonged dives since the sea Maldivian is very rich in plankton and the risk of infections is increased if you do not wash your ears thoroughly with fresh water after each dive) as well as specific medicines if you suffer from health problems.

To conclude, the baggage needed for a holiday in the Maldives requires few but right things. Remember to inquire about the precise baggage allowance allowed on your flights, especially on the seaplane. Travel light, ready to fill your suitcase with unforgettable memories and beautiful experiences.
